Everything Black Owned: Covington and Conyers ed.
Hey Y’all! I know I’ve been ghost for awhile, but this year has been so crazy. I’ve really been taking time to rest and stay sane. Thankfully, being back home has given me ample space to do that. praise hands
Speaking of being home, I’ve been getting reacquainted with the area, and in doing so I’ve noticed some Black-owned shops that I’d like to highlight.
If you’re in the area, think of some ways you can intentionally work them into your schedule when you’re looking to take care of your beauty needs, buy a meal, get a coffee or add a new book to your collection. 😊
1. Carol’s Beauty Supply
This is my store. I go there for my braiding hair, my African Shea Butter, and anything else I decide I need while I’m in there (y’all know the drill lol). It’s one of the few Black-owned beauty supply stores out there, so I’m intentional about patronizing them for my beauty/haircare needs.
Two things to note:
There are two locations: One in Covington and one in Conyers, so take your pick!
Sometimes they don’t have everything I’m looking for readily available, but if you tell them what you need, they’ll order it for you. <3 #bigvibes

2. Onyx Bookstore Cafe
A Black-owned bookstore and cafe in Covington! My my my. What a time! This independent shop offers books, fresh baked goods, international coffee, merch and what I’m sure is a good vibe. I know we’re all trying to stay safe(recommended), but if you can, stop by to pick up a book and grab something sweet on your way out. We want to make sure we keep them in business.

3. The Town House Cafe
If you’re a Covington native, yo grandmama nem may know it as “Hamm’s.” This historic, Black-owned restaurant, created by a Black woman and passed down through the generations, sits just off the square at Covington, and they have the BEST patty melt I have ever had in my life. Fun fact: it was featured in Tyler Perry’s movie, “A Family That Preys.”

4. Karen’s International
If you know, you know! My family has been a fan of this Caribbean neighborhood staple since it opened, and believe me when I say the Jerk chicken plate goes UP. If you don’t eat meat, that’s no problem. Ms. Karen offers vegan and vegetarian dishes as well. If want to watch your spending and help keep Black owned businesses open, Ms. Karen has a lunch special that’s only $4.99 and it’s offered from 12-3 PM, M-F. Pull up!

5. MaddLulu Cafe
This cute, rustic, family-owned shop can be found in Porterdale, GA in the shops over by the reservoir. Points index finger with my thumb covering my other three fingers and uses other index finger to tap as I talk about what’s on their menu -> They offer fruit teas, milk teas, ice cream, smoothies, pastries and so on and so forth. What you need?
We, my family, are personally big fans of the Lavender Latte, but with a menu like the one they boast, you can pick your own fave.
